Raphael Buencamino, MD, PhD, FAAP
Dr. Buencamino was Kona Pediatrics’ first ever hire. He was hand picked straight out of his pediatric residency at the University of Hawaii, and he has been one of our strongest and kindest physicians ever since.
Dr. B’s love of pediatrics began when he was volunteering as a camp counselor for children with cancer. The experience was memorable and eye opening; watching kids deal with the excitement and stresses of adolescence all in the face of an often unpredictable illness. It was a chance for them to breathe and play. He even taught an autistic teenager how to, “do the douggie.”
Dr. Buencamino was moved by the sadness of their situation, but also the bravery and resilience they displayed in dealing with it. “It would be great if I could discover the cure for cancer or other childhood illnesses, but just being there for them; being a great doctor and trying to give these kids the best life possible is worth it for me.”
When not in the hospital, Dr. B enjoys attending music festivals like Coachella and Burning Man. He is an avid fan of all things fantasy and Sci-Fi, from Game of Thrones to Lord of the Rings and Star Trek...all of which goes perfectly with the PhD in Biophysics he earned in 2005 (we’re not kidding).
Pediatric SuperPower- Being fluent in multiple languages including toddler, teenager, scared Mama Bear, and millennial, Dr. B has a knack for diagnosing unusual illnesses, and being able to talk to children of all ages and their families in a way that makes them comfortable, relaxed and reassured.
